So many small companies try so hard to seem bigger than they really are. This stems from good intention, but can actually hurt you if you’re not careful. There are plenty of advantages to being a smaller company. We, for example, are a small team of three people. When we first started, we were so intimidated by bigger agencies with more people and firepower than we have. We quickly realized, however, some advantages to being small. For one, being small means being more personal. You are able to provide better customer service to your clients and be more authentic when nurturing leads. Use this to your advantage when trying to land new jobs and clients. There can also be less stress and headaches when you aren’t dealing with a dozen or more employees, payroll and other issues that plaque larger companies. If your business is bigger, you can use your power and ability to handle more to your advantage by taking on jobs that smaller agencies or businesses can’t handle themselves.
Tell your story – Every single business and individual has their own story that makes them special and different in their own special way. Even the smallest differences can help you stand out. What are some positive qualities that are unique to you? How did you get to where you are in life? People buy and consume what our products stand for and their stories more than they buy our product or service. For us, we know that there are a lot of companies that can sell the same type of website we sell. With that in mind, we market our story and the experience that comes with buying one of our websites. People like to know that they will be treated with respect and that their opinion matters. Especially when they are spending big money on website.
Focus on your legacy – Businesses that have been around for a long time and are very successful all focus on leaving a legacy. They have made sure to become a household name and make the things they stand for very clear. Standing out isn’t achieved by advertising all of the products in your line. It’s done by building a killer brand awareness that people can relate to. Think about Apple. Apple’s marketing campaigns don’t consist of listing all of the iPhone’s features or telling consumers why the iPad is better than the Android tablets. They focus on marketing ideas and beliefs to people who share their school of thought and showing people a new way of thinking. Their focus is on telling their story and daring to be bold and different. This is why they are so well-known and able to stand out.
Blog, Blog, Blog – One great way to get noticed online is blogging. No matter what industry you are in, there is always some type of value that you can provide to people. Be it daily updates on the best prices for wine or the latest tips to keep your website running smoothly, there is value out there. Providing this value can help you earn the trust of consumers as well as gain higher rankings on search engines. You can get a blog up and running extremely easily using WordPress.
Facebook – As we are sure you already know, every body and their brother is now on Facebook. Facebook is an extremely social experience, which is why it is so popular. Because of this, it is a great platform for businesses to connect with potential customers. Because Facebook is so social, however, its users can spot fakes from a mile away. If you use Facebook to do nothing but try to get sales, you will have little to no success. If, however, you use it to connect with people and help them, you will build a ton of brand awareness over time and have the potential to grow substantially.
