Business changes, life changes and even we change.  This is just the way life works.  So why, then, do we continue to utilize traditional advertising as our only means of communication with customers?  It’s amazing that with the advent of social media and its growing popularity more people don’t see it as a communication channel.  There is so much potential in Facebook, Twitter and many other networks, yet the majority of businesses don’t utilize them.  We are going to discuss why traditional advertising is not as effective as it once was and how social media is continuing to change the way business is done.

Tradition – For years, radio, TV, newspapers, magazines and other channels have been the go-to for advertising.  This worked great, for a while.  For some time, consumers would listen to exactly what you told them.  If you were the “number one in auto repair”, they believed it whole-heartedly.  With the advent of social and realizing how many choices for products and services there really were, however, consumers started to think for themselves.  They began to realize that there were plenty of companies out there willing to be honest with them, and that the ones they were listening to really weren’t that great.  This shift has made way for equality among businesses in the sense that advertising is more accessible to small businesses.  With this in mind, it’s easy to see that tradition is shifting.  It is time to get on board or be left behind.

What’s Next?

It’s time to make new tradition and rewrite the history books of marketing and advertising.  The change is already happening, yet so many aren’t catching on.  There are so many great reasons to get in on the social revolution, yet businesses turn up their noses and choose to continue using channels that are more expensive and less effective.  We wanted to share with you some of the best reasons to use social in your marketing and advertising strategy:

  • Targeting – Advertising on social, especially Facebook, allows you to target your audience based on interests, age, location, marital status and many other factors.  This means that you can tailor your audience to those who are interested in your product or service.  You can test different audiences and discover your best audience for maximum ROI.
  • Cost – For the most part, Facebook ads are pretty affordable.  You can spend as little as $5.00 per day or as much as $5,000 and up.  By being creative, you can target an audience that isn’t as sought after and get extremely low rates on your ads.  Compared to traditional advertising, these prices are great.
  • Expertise – Getting known on Facebook and other networks as an “expert” in your field, can do wonders for your brand equity and selling power.  If you push valuable content, people will appreciate it and trust you.
  • High ROI – When targeted properly, Facebook ads get click-through rates as high as 60% and up.  This is great because  you can spend less and gain more from it.

Things To Keep In Mind – Facebook ads and ads on other social networks aren’t like traditional ads.  If you use them strictly to get sales or leads, you will not succeed.  In a world of content, people expect you to provide them value, not just information on how to buy your product.  If you don’t provide value and build trust, someone else will, and you will be out.  This is important to remember, because it is changing the way people buy and sell.  No longer do we rely on businesses to tell us they are the best so that we can make a thoughtless decision to buy.  We are reading reviews, checking Facebook comments and seeing what consumers are saying about them on Twitter.  We are talking to our friends to see if businesses and products are actually worth buying.  As businesses, if we are not being friends to these consumers and building relationships, we will not be choices in their minds.
